Virginia coach Tony Bennett installed a new play late last month for end-of-game situations, but he didn't have much confidence in. Maybe Malcolm Brogdon was saving himself for a big moment. ''I guess it's better to make it in a game.'' Brogdon came off screen and drained a 3-pointer with 0.4 seconds remaining to lift the visiting Cavaliers a 48-45 victory. The play is designed for either Brogdon or Joe Harris, the team's top 3-point shooter.

The 24-year-old forward scored two goals, including the winner 2:25 into overtime to give the Flames a 4-3 victory over the Minnesota Wild on Saturday night. Backlund aggressively took the puck to the net and sent a pass to Sean Monahan, whose shot was stopped by goalie Darcy Kuemper. The puck bounced high, and Backlund batted it in from out of midair.

After struggling to score any goals for four games, the San Jose Sharks had plenty of moves left for a shootout. Joe Thornton capped San Jose's perfect shootout with a nifty toe-drag past Corey Crawford that helped the Sharks snap a three-game losing streak with a 2-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday night. ''What a move,'' Sharks coach Todd McLellan said. It's nice that it came out.'' Joe Pavelski scored a short-handed goal in regulation and opened the shootout with a goal, and Patrick Marleau also scored in the tiebreaker for the Sharks, who have won six straight shootouts.
Dan Ellis, Stars shut out NHL-leading Ducks 2-0 (Yahoo Sports)
Yahoo Sports - NHL News par Anonyme le 02/02/2014 à 07:41:00 - Favoriser (lu/non lu)
Dan Ellis learned a few things about the Anaheim Ducks' top scorers during 1 1/2 seasons as the team's backup goalie, and he put all that knowledge to work in a breakthrough victory for the Dallas Stars. Ellis made 26 saves against his former team in his 14th career shutout, and Trevor Daley scored in the Stars' 2-0 victory over the Ducks on Saturday night. Ellis played in 23 games as a backup in Anaheim from February 2011 to 2012, but did his best work while absorbing innumerable shots in practice from Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry and Teemu Selanne. Ellis used that familiarity throughout his second victory over the Ducks this season, even denying Perry's point-blank chance in the final minute by getting an outstretched pad in front of an open net.

Phil Kessel left most of his talking on the ice, but saved a little more for the dressing room. Kessel scored three goals, and the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Ottawa Senators 6-3 on Saturday night for their sixth straight win at home. They went in tonight.'' With 5:59 left, Tyler Bozak fed a pass to Kessel, who scored his 30th goal of the season to complete his hat trick and give Toronto a 4-3 lead. As for celebrating his second hat trick of the season, Kessel said his plans were to ''go home and hang out.'' Bozak, who shares an apartment in Toronto with Kessel, was shocked to see the forward talking to reporters.
