Matthias Mayer grew up in Austria admiring plenty of Alpine skiers, from his medal-winning dad, to all-time great Hermann Maier, to a couple of guys he races against these days, Bode Miller and Aksel Lund Svindal. Unexpectedly, Mayer now can call himself something none of those others can: Olympic downhill champion. Four years after ski-loving Austria departed the Winter Games with zero men's Alpine medals for the first time, Mayer made his nation 1-for-1 in 2014, upstaging pre-race favorites Miller and Svindal by charging down the course in 2 minutes, 6.23 seconds Sunday to win gold in the sport's premier event.

Marcus Smart hustled back on defense to prevent a dunk and went careening into the crowd behind the basket. He was helped to his feet with only seconds remaining and No. 19 Oklahoma State on its way to a fourth straight defeat. Suddenly incensed, Smart got in the face of a Texas Tech fan who appeared to say something to the star guard. Smart shoved him with two hands.

The officials were allowing aggressive, physical play, so the Grizzlies turned up the defensive pressure against Atlanta while setting an NBA record with only one free throw attempt. Zach Randolph scored 20 points and the Grizzlies set a low-scoring pace in shutting down the Hawks 79-76 Saturday night. Memphis's one free throw attempt is the record low since the shot-clock era was introduced in 1954-55, according to STATS. Memphis players were astonished to see only one free throw on their stat line.

Xavier Thames scored 17 points, Winston Shepard had 16 and No. 5 San Diego State beat Nevada 73-58 on Saturday night to tie the school record with its 20th straight win. The Aztecs (21-1, 10-0 Mountain West) matched the 20-game win streak by the 2010-11 team, which won its first 20 games before losing at BYU. The current Aztecs are the first to open league play 10-0.

Marvin Williams has been so hot the last three games that he didn't let an air ball bother him. With Utah leading by seven in the fourth quarter against the reigning NBA champs, the Jazz forward released a 22-foot jumper that wasn't close. The Jazz came right back to the unfazed Williams and his back-to-back 3-pointers sparked Utah to a 94-89 win over the Miami Heat. ''I can't think of a bigger win than this one,'' said Williams, who scored 23 points.

Tekele Cotton scored 18 points and fourth-ranked Wichita State beat Northern Iowa 82-73 on Saturday night, clearing perhaps its toughest remaining regular-season hurdle. Cleanthony Early had all 16 of his points in the first half for the Shockers (25-0, 12-0 Missouri Valley Conference), who beat second-place Indiana State on the road Wednesday night. ''Going to Indiana State and Northern Iowa back-to-back, that's a chore for anyone,'' Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall said.

Moody Madness indeed, and quicker than even Hall of Fame coach Larry Brown thought. Nick Russell had 15 points to go with a couple of big steals as SMU beat No. 7 Cincinnati 76-55 on Saturday night, ending the Bearcats' 15-game winning streak. It was the Mustangs' third win over a Top 25 team in seven games since moving back into renovated Moody Coliseum on campus five weeks ago. ''If we didn't have a good team, all we'd have is a beautiful building,'' said Brown, in his second season at SMU.

We were just giving up the ball and luckily, I was on the receiving end.'' A 6-foot-6 senior, Ejim scored 20 straight Iowa State points during one stretch in the second half and easily notched his 30th career double-double. Iowa State's school record is 54 by Lafester Rhodes in an overtime victory over Iowa in 1987.
