Julien Brouillette won't be joining his five Washington Capitals teammates who are on their way to play Olympic hockey in Sochi. Brouillette broke a scoreless tie with his first NHL goal midway through the third period, Braden Holtby stopped 25 shots and the Washington Capitals beat the New Jersey Devils 3-0 Saturday night in the teams' final game before the Olympic break. ''It's going to be hard to sleep tonight.'' After the Capitals controlled a faceoff in the New Jersey zone, Brouillette beat Cory Schneider on the short side with a wrist shot from the top of the left circle at the 10:50 mark. ''I'm sure he's flying pretty high right now,'' Capitals coach Adam Oates said.

He received plenty of help from the Stars' defense and got goals from Ray Whitney and Russia's Valeri Nichushkin. The victory moved Dallas into the eighth and final playoff position in the Western Conference for the first time this season.

The Detroit Red Wings latest milestone game had a disheartening outcome. Alex Killorn scored a tiebreaking goal late in the third period, Ondrej Palat had two goals and the Tampa Bay Lightning beat Detroit 4-2 Saturday night in the Red Wings' 6,000th regular-season game. Daniel Alfredsson and Tomas Jurco scored for Detroit, which has a record of 2,761-2,320-815-104 since joining the NHL for the 1926-27 season. ''We didn't have everybody being good enough here tonight in my opinion,'' Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said.

Duchene scores twice, Avs beat Islanders 5-2 (Yahoo Sports)

(AP Photo/Kathy Kmonicek)

Leading 3-0 with only 11:25 left, the Colorado Avalanche committed a seemingly meaningless penalty to give the New York Islanders a power play. But then, the Avalanche committed three more infractions over the next 3:44, and the Islanders took advantage to score two 5-on-3 goals. Somehow, Colorado survived Saturday night. The Avalanche regained their composure, and held on to beat the Islanders 5-2 - the deceptive margin coming as the result of two empty-net goals in the final minute.

Phil Kessel had the winning goal after nearly fighting a familiar foe. Kessel scored the second of three straight goals for Toronto in the third period and the Maple Leafs rallied to beat the Vancouver Canucks 3-1 on Saturday night. The U.S. Olympian assisted on the Maple Leafs' third goal and almost had his first Gordie Howe hat trick - a goal, an assist and a fight - when he and pesky Alexandre Burrows scuffled and just about dropped the gloves late in the second period. ''(Kessel) wasn't too thrilled about all that and neither was anyone on the bench,'' linemate James van Riemsdyk said.

The Montreal Canadiens needed a little time to get up to speed in their final game before the Olympic break. When they did, they left behind the Carolina Hurricanes. David Desharnais scored twice and the Canadiens rallied for a 4-1 victory Saturday night. ''We had a little slump a couple of weeks ago and we wanted to get out of it,'' Desharnais said.

Even with team captain Zdeno Chara already in Russia and four more players headed that way, the Boston Bruins didn't appear to have even the slightest pre-Olympic distraction. The Bruins closed out their surge to the Olympic break with a 7-2 rout of the Ottawa Senators on Saturday as seven Boston players finished with multiple points. We wanted to end this on a good note and feeling good about ourselves heading into the break and I think we've done that,'' said Patrice Bergeron, who had two goals and an assist. The Bruins won for the ninth time in 11 games with one loss coming in overtime and enter the break with a large lead in the Atlantic Division and second-best record in the Eastern Conference.

It worked Saturday, with Oshie and Vladimir Tarasenko scoring in the tiebreaker to give the St. Louis Blues a 4-3 victory over the Winnipeg Jets. ''I try to switch it up,'' Oshie said. The crowd chanted ''USA! USA! as Oshie skated in on Al Montoya and beat him.

Schenn, Hartnell lead Flyers over Flames (Yahoo Sports)

After playing some of their best hockey this month, the Philadelphia Flyers now sit and wait. Brayden Schenn and Scott Hartnell scored, Ray Emery stopped 32 shots and the Flyers beat the Calgary Flames 2-1 on Saturday for their fourth straight victory. With momentum going their way, it's not an ideal time for Philadelphia to take 18 days off for the Olympic break. ''I'm going to relax mentally and make sure I'm ready for the second half,'' captain Claude Giroux said.
