Kjetil Jansrud won his audition for Norwegian idol at the Sochi Olympics. In an Alpine event that Norway absolutely owns, Jansrud won a thrilling men's super-G race Sunday one week after earning bronze in downhill. Norway's fourth straight super-G gold, and fifth in the past seven Winter Games, put the 28-year-old Jansrud in a proud Olympic tradition started by now-retired great Kjetil Andre Aamodt and extended by Aksel Lund Svindal, his more heralded teammate. Andrew Weibrecht charged late at Jansrud's time of 1 minute, 18.14 seconds to take a surprise silver, edging U.S. teammate Bode Miller and Jan Hudec of Canada into a tie for bronze.

Boston Red Sox right-hander Ryan Dempster plans to take this season off, a decision that surprised teammates and will cost the 16-year veteran $13.25 million in salary. Dempster said Sunday he is stepping away for physical reasons and to spend more time with his family. ''I had an incredible run, a chance to play 16 years in the major leagues and be around a lot of great teammates, made a lot of good friendships, great friendships,'' Dempster said one day before the first formal spring training workout for pitchers and catchers. I'm at peace with my decision.'' Dempster, whose contract expires after this season, finished his only year with the Red Sox with an 8-9 record and a 4.57 ERA and didn't get a start during their postseason run to a World Series title.

Wisconsin was on the verge of wasting a tremendous first half, so with Michigan rallying and the crowd roaring, the Badgers calmly went inside to Frank Kaminsky. ''I was able to make some things happen.'' Kaminsky had 25 points and 11 rebounds, and No. 21 Wisconsin smothered No. 15 Michigan in the first half before holding on for a 75-62 victory Sunday. The Wolverines cut an 18-point deficit to three in the second half, but Kaminsky personally went on a 7-2 run after that, helping Wisconsin regain control. ''We were talking about touching the post, yes,'' Badgers coach Bo Ryan said.

Phil Kessel is the first American in more than a decade to score a hat trick in an Olympic hockey tournament. Kessel scored two of his three goals within the opening five minutes to lead the U.S. to a 5-1 win against Slovenia on Sunday. The U.S. is undefeated through three games and if it can win three more, the nation will celebrate its first Olympic championship in hockey since the ''Miracle on Ice'' at the Lake Placid Games. ''We just want to win games.'' No members of Team USA were alive when the U.S. beat the Soviet Union in 1980 in one of the biggest upsets in sports history.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) -- New York Mets ace Matt Harvey has tried to remain optimistic the last four months, but even he sees the possibility of pitching in 2014 slipping away. The 24-year-old ace arrived at Mets spring training camp Sunday, had his reconstructed right elbow checked out and declared that everything was fine. However, the ultimate goal of returning this season to help the Mets be a contender in the National League East appears to be out of reach. ''Everything's going well, but it's a little bit difficult of a day because I'm starting to realize the year's not going to go the way I want it to,'' said Harvey, addressing the media from the bench in the home dugout at the Mets' training complex.

Craig Kimbrel saw the growing list of young Braves players committing to long-term deals and decided he wanted to jump on board. Atlanta locked up another important piece of its foundation Sunday by agreeing to a $42 million, four-year contract with Kimbrel, the All-Star closer. I think this is a core that can win for a long time.'' The deal with Kimbrel came only two days after the Braves and right-hander Julio Teheran, 23, agreed to terms on a six-year, $32.4 million contract on Friday. Earlier this month, the Braves announced multiyear deals with a pair of 24-year-old hitters - first baseman Freddie Freeman and outfielder Jason Heyward.

The woman who has dominated her sport for a decade came to the Olympics for the third time Sunday, in search of the gold medal she gave away once and lost in one of those so-called ''racin' deals'' the other time. Far ahead of the other five riders in her semifinal heat on a sunny, slushy afternoon at Rosa Khutor Extreme Park, Jacobellis misjudged the second-to-last turn on the course, flew over a jump too fast, lost her balance and skidded onto her back.

The U.S. has swept the podium in men's slopestyle skiing. Joss Christensen soared to gold in the sport's Olympic debut, posting a score of 95.80 to beat teammates Gus Kenworthy and Nick Goepper. The gold was the fourth for the U.S. in Sochi, all won on the slopes of the Rosa Khutor Extreme Park. In conditions better suited for a spring break in the mountains than the Winter Olympics, the 22-year-old Christensen was by far the best.
