Beast Mode was Least Mode again. Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch abruptly ended his media availability - again - walking away from a throng of reporters while escorted by a member of the New Jersey State Police on Wednesday after about 7 uncomfortable minutes in which he answered just a few questions. The NFL put that fine on hold, saying it would be rescinded if he complied with media obligations. During media day, Lynch spoke for 6 1/2 minutes before leaving, then returning to speak to Deion Sanders for NFL Network, to the Seahawks website, and to Armed Forces Network - and acknowledged he was trying to avoid being fined by the league for not meeting his media requirements.

So much for all the hand-wringing about a snowed-in Super Bowl. What if the NFL decided to postpone its championship game between the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks for 24 hours? If the National Weather Service's forecast is correct, the buzz about a blizzard at the first cold-weather, outdoor Super Bowl - the official host committee logo features a snowflake - will turn out to be just talk. ''It would have been cool in the snow,'' Seattle linebacker Heath Farwell said.

Down by 18 points midway through the opening quarter, Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder looked well on their way to witnessing a rout. Durant remained sizzling with 33 points, Serge Ibaka added 22 and the Thunder roared back from an abysmal start - they trailed 22-4 early - to embarrass the Miami Heat 112-95 on Wednesday night, erasing that big deficit out of the gate by outscoring the two-time defending champions by 43 points over a 33-minute span. Miami was 3 for 19 from beyond the arc. And the Oklahoma City bench outscored Miami's reserves 39-21, with Jeremy Lamb scoring 18 and Derek Fisher going 5 for 5 from 3-point range for his 15 points.

The New York Rangers have quickly warmed to the challenge of playing outside in the chill of winter. Despite being the road team in both games at frigid Yankee Stadium, the Broadway Blueshirts made themselves at home in the ballpark in the Bronx and completed a sweep of the New Jersey Devils and New York Islanders. The Rangers rallied for the second straight game and topped the Islanders 2-1 on Wednesday night on Daniel Carcillo's tiebreaking goal 4:36 into the third period. On Sunday, the Rangers dug out of a 3-1 hole against the Devils and scored the final six goals.

When the Edmonton Oilers traded for goalie Ben Scrivens on Jan. 15, they hoped he would help bring some consistency to the position. Scrivens stopped 59 shots, an NHL regular-season record for saves in a shutout, leading the Oilers to a 3-0 victory over the San Jose Sharks. ''Hats off to the goaltender, he was tremendous,'' said San Jose coach Todd McLellan. We attempted 100 shots on goal, that doesn't happen very often.'' Scrivens topped the previous mark set by Phoenix's Mike Smith, who stopped 54 shots in a 2-0 victory over Columbus on April 3, 2012.

For nearly 9 minutes, Arizona made defensive stop after stop. In that critical sequence, the top-ranked Wildcats held Stanford scoreless and helped preserve their perfect start to the season. For Arizona, three straight defensive stops is called a ''kill.'' Nick Johnson kept Arizona's unblemished record going for another game, hitting a go-ahead 3-pointer with 51 seconds remaining and two free throws with 5.8 seconds left as Arizona survived for a 60-57 victory Wednesday night for its school-record 21st straight win. Our defense won the game tonight,'' Arizona coach Sean Miller said.

Just minutes after Andrew Wiggins put No. 6 Kansas on his back, scoring six of his career-high 29 points in the defining moment of the game, Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg offered a glowing assessment of the star freshman. ''You can tell he's oozing with confidence,'' Hoiberg said Wednesday night after his 16th-ranked Cyclones lost 92-81, ''and that's scary.'' The nation's No. 1 recruit, Wiggins has finally started to live up to his hype. He matched his 27-point performance in a win over TCU last weekend with a dunk that gave Kansas an 81-72 lead with just under 3 minutes remaining, and then added a couple free throws for his career high. Perry Ellis added 20 points, Joel Embiid had 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Naadir Tharpe finished with 12 points and 12 assists for the Jayhawks (16-4, 7-0 Big 12), who won their seventh straight game.
