Drew Doughty earned a spot on Canada's Olympic team because of his ability to move the puck, skate and hit hard. The Los Angeles defenseman is also providing Canada with a surprising offensive boost at the Sochi Games. Doughty broke a scoreless tie midway through the first period and scored the game-winning goal with 2:28 left in overtime, giving the Canadians a 2-1 win over Finland on Sunday. ''I don't know what's going on,'' said Doughty, who has four goals in three Olympic games after scoring just eight times in 59 NHL games this season.

With miserable memories of T.J. Oshie still fresh in their minds, the Russians were right back in another shootout. An unknown Slovak goalie had blanked their powerful offense for 65 minutes, and Russia was one Oshie-esque moment away from a second straight Olympic loss. Although Ilya Kovalchuk and Alexander Radulov were hobbled, they wouldn't let it happen. Semyon Varlamov stopped 27 shots, Radulov and Kovalchuk scored in the shootout, and Russia beat Slovakia 1-0 on Sunday, bouncing back from that shootout loss to the U.S. one day earlier.

Phil Kessel is the first American in more than a decade to score a hat trick in an Olympic hockey tournament. Kessel scored two of his three goals within the opening five minutes to lead the U.S. to a 5-1 win against Slovenia on Sunday. The U.S. is undefeated through three games and if it can win three more, the nation will celebrate its first Olympic championship in hockey since the ''Miracle on Ice'' at the Lake Placid Games. ''We just want to win games.'' No members of Team USA were alive when the U.S. beat the Soviet Union in 1980 in one of the biggest upsets in sports history.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) -- New York Mets ace Matt Harvey has tried to remain optimistic the last four months, but even he sees the possibility of pitching in 2014 slipping away. The 24-year-old ace arrived at Mets spring training camp Sunday, had his reconstructed right elbow checked out and declared that everything was fine. However, the ultimate goal of returning this season to help the Mets be a contender in the National League East appears to be out of reach. ''Everything's going well, but it's a little bit difficult of a day because I'm starting to realize the year's not going to go the way I want it to,'' said Harvey, addressing the media from the bench in the home dugout at the Mets' training complex.

Craig Kimbrel saw the growing list of young Braves players committing to long-term deals and decided he wanted to jump on board. Atlanta locked up another important piece of its foundation Sunday by agreeing to a $42 million, four-year contract with Kimbrel, the All-Star closer. I think this is a core that can win for a long time.'' The deal with Kimbrel came only two days after the Braves and right-hander Julio Teheran, 23, agreed to terms on a six-year, $32.4 million contract on Friday. Earlier this month, the Braves announced multiyear deals with a pair of 24-year-old hitters - first baseman Freddie Freeman and outfielder Jason Heyward.
