Northwestern quarterback Kain Colter testified Tuesday that he was essentially paid to play via his scholarship as the National Labor Relations Board opened a closely watched hearing on a bid to form what would be the first union for college athletes in U.S. history. From a witnesses stand in a federal court building, Colter characterized playing college football as a job and said schools make clear to incoming players that athletics are a higher priority than academics. Colter, a co-founder of the newly formed College Athletes Players Association, said players adhere to grueling schedules, putting in 40- to 50-hour weeks on football during and before the season.

A year after taking a major pay cut to help the Washington Redskins through their salary cap woes, DeAngelo Hall has a new deal with a nice raise. The three-time Pro Bowl cornerback agreed to terms for a four-year contract with the Redskins on Tuesday, according to a person familiar with the negotiations. That's a reversal from 2013, when the Redskins cut Hall because they couldn't afford him, then re-signed him on the cheap. With the cap penalty behind them, the Redskins have plenty of money to spend, but they have a lot of players to sign.

Omark headed to Europe after released by Sabres (Yahoo Sports)

The Buffalo Sabres released forward Linus Omark by terminating his contract, in a move that frees the Swedish-born player to pursue his career in Europe. The Sabres announced the move once Omark went unclaimed Tuesday, a day after being placed on unconditional waivers. The team's decision to cut ties with Omark came a little more than a week after the player declined to report to Buffalo's AHL affiliate in Rochester. Omark's agent, Kevin Epp, said in an email to The Associated Press that his client is traveling to Europe, though it's not yet clear where he will be playing.

David Wise considers himself a dad and husband first, a freestyle skier second. Soaring through sloppy snow and sleet, Wise won the first gold medal in the young sport of halfpipe skiing Tuesday, outclassing a field in Sochi that had trouble with the slow, waterlogged conditions. Sightlines were less than perfect on the first true soaker of a night at the action-sports venue, but not so bad that Wise couldn't look down from the top and see his wife, Lexi, and the rest of his family members cheering at the base of the halfpipe. After placing a heart-shaped rock Lexi gave him into one pocket, the 23-year-old from Reno, Nev., dropped into the halfpipe and scored a 92 - a mark that held up to beat Canada's Mike Riddle by 1.4 points.

Roman Cervenka scored for a second time late in the second period to give the Czech Republic a four-goal lead, and it went on to beat Slovakia 5-3 on Tuesday and advance to an Olympic quarterfinal match against the United States. ''We're one game away to play for a medal and that's pretty special,'' David Krejci said after scoring the third of the Czechs' first-period goals. They pulled their goaltender to create an even-strength situation and Tomas Plekanec scored an empty-net goal 14 seconds later for the Czechs. ''We got the job done, that's the most important thing,'' said Krejci, a Boston Bruins forward.

Latvia holds off Swiss 3-1 to reach quarterfinals (Yahoo Sports)

Latvia's reward for its first Olympic victory in 12 years is a quarterfinal date with defending champion Canada. That sobering realization couldn't dampen the thrill for coach Ted Nolan and his underdog players after they made a bit of hockey history in Sochi. Oskars Bartulis and Lauris Darzins scored in the first period, and Latvia reached the Olympic men's hockey quarterfinals for the first time with a 3-1 victory over Switzerland on Tuesday night. Edgars Masalskis made 32 saves and Darzins added an empty-net goal in the Latvians' first Olympic victory since 2002, when they returned to the games after a 66-year absence.

Lauryn Williams and Elana Meyers laughed off smashing their bobsled into a wall a few days ago, knowing this wasn't the time to let anything get in their way of winning an Olympic medal. And for Williams, a special place in Olympic history is within reach. Williams, a former sprint champion who decided to give bobsled a whirl six months ago, and Meyers lead at the halfway point of women's Olympic bobsled, which has turned into a three-team race with two of them decked out in red, white and blue. With Williams using her world-class speed to propel her teammate off the starting line, Meyers made two trips down the Sanki Sliding Center track in 1 minute, 54.89 seconds on Tuesday to open a 0.23-second lead over Canada's Kaillie Humphries and Heather Moyse, trying to win their second straight title after getting gold in Vancouver.
